36 5 window door glass install help

Next week im going to try to install new door glass in my 36 coupe. Have new regulators, glass, and new window channel kit. Anyone have any tips on this or should i let a glass shop do the work. Looks like a real *****. Do you need to take out the metal window channels? Looks like they are rivited on.any info would help. Thanks, ken.

The original window channels have a "hook" on the top and a single screw on the bottom. Remove the screw and lift up on the channel and it should pop out. I've alos seen some without the bottom screw and a notch in the bottom of the channel that slides into a tab on the door frame. The tab is bent in to secure the channel.

Installing the glass into the the bottom channel is critical. Locating the glass is what keeps the rollers on the regulator from falling out the ends of the channel. If you have the old glass and channel, measure very carefully before inserting the new glass.

What worked best for me is to have the regulator laying in the bottom of the door. Drop the new glass/bottom channel in from the top, then get the rollers into the bottom channel. It's a 2 man job! Then lift the whole assembly into place and install the screws into the regulator.

Happy knuckle bleeding!

I'll reiterate the importance of having the bottom channel properly positioned on the glass, fore / aft - there's not much spare channel, so get it wrong and the rollers come off at the end of the travel.

There's removable stops on the regulators (screw) which enables you to wind the regulator down further than normal so that the rollers can be engaged in the channel - then you wind it up a little and reinstall the stops. Don't recall not having the regulator is situ though and i certainly did this alone. Did i mention i'm an octopus? Horrible job though. And i'd lube the rollers and channel after installation - doing it beforehand just makes an awkward job even harder and messier.

The felt lined door channels go in last i think. Leaving them out affords some manouverability for the glass as you're getting the bottom channel onto the regulator.

Good luck!

Chris
