352 cooling upgrade?

The 352/2bbl in my 1960 Country Sedan runs hot in traffic or idling; it's fine when moving down the road.
It has a 4-blade fan and original radiator.

I would like to keep it looking stock under the hood, if possible.

Change fan to 5 or 6-blade? Change to electric fan? Replace radiator with aftermarket? Other ...

Thanks for your thoughts and
Happy Motoring!

I had that back in the day on my 62 xl convertible, it was bad head gaskets, the metal rusted away where it blocks the ports, new gaskets and it was fixed. paul

A coolant system flush may be a good idea. To get rid of any sediment clogging the radiator or block.

Just keep pets & wildlife away from what comes out by taking the drained fluid to a local quick lube shop.

A clutch type fan and shroud from an A/C car can help too after the cleanout. Also it will quieten car down at speed and not look as out of place as an electric fan.

How long has it been since the radiator was removed and cleaned externally? Depending on how often it is driven it could be full of dirt and bugs.

My approach to an issue like this is: First - if you haven't already - find out what your coolant temp actually is. If you already have a good quality aftermarket temp gauge (preferably mechanical) installed, then you can move on to other considerations. If you still have the original temp gauge, though, I wouldn't necessarily trust it. (I'm surprised how many people do.) If you don't want to put a new gauge in, then an infrared temp gun is in order.

Flushing out is a good idea, as others have said. If you have excessive rust, folks at the AACA forum have suggested Evaporust, which I've tried and has worked well. You keep it in the system for a while, so of course winter isn't a good time to use it since there's no antifreeze protection.

Beyond that, I put a radiator from Wizard Cooling in my '61 Merc 352, and I was very pleased with the quality of their stuff, but they aren't original looking or cheap. It was aluminum, so it's probably advisable to use a zinc sacrificial anode in the system. The Wizard radiator is still working good and keeping the engine cool enough...but the original radiator should be good enough to keep it cool, if it's working. Shrouds are supposed to help, though I made one from a couple of half shrouds from Speedway and I can't say how much they help.

Worn out engines can cause overheating, too. Of course, all the old cars I've owned have run hotter in stop and go than on the highway - kind of the nature of the beast - so knowing what your temp actually is would be important. Good luck

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

I recall the 1960 Country Squire, bought new, my family drove: Dad used to turn off the a/c in traffic so it wouldn't overheat.

I've flushed the radiator in my Country Sedan but not had it out and professionally boiled and flow-checked. Will do that before I change radiators.
What about a five-blade fan instead of the OEM four-blade? Anyone done that?

You will be surprised how much cooler it will run, if you take it out and have the top removed, then rodded out, through each of the cooling tubes, then boiled, then the top solderer back on. I did it to my stock (auto trans) radiator in my 53' Merc and there have been no issues since.

Not sure is they still made three separate radiators in 1960. In 53' they made one for the standard trans, one for the automatic trans and high temp one for the desert states.

More fan won’t help a plugged cooling system so the above suggestions are in order. If you still have a cooling problem, here’s a couple discussions from the y block site.

One’s current, relating to fan noise, which may or may not apply to you.

The other is an old discussion of overheating (probably doesn’t apply to you) but there’s also some discussions on fan clutches and pulley changes that might be of interest if you do need more fan. Particularly the comments by Greenbird56
