35 U-Joint Question

When installing the U-Joint onto the transmission shaft, I noticed that when the bolt is tight there will be a small gap at the end of the shaft, thus by tightening the bolt it forces the U-Joint against the main transmission bearing. Is that to take up end play or something and how tight should that bolt be?

Thanks much,

Peder

You are correct,

The U joint is what retains the inner race of the rear tranmsmission bearing. The inner race should be clamped nice and tight so it will not turn and also there is no end play in the main shaft. The Bolt should have a big thick flat washer and a lock washer on it an it should be tight. I do not have my books here at home, but I would think 35 Ft. Lbs. or so.

The U joint will slide as necessary on the splines of the drive shaft.
