The hinge does function. It moves the back rest to a different angle when the bench is slid back and forth to suit the driver. You almost have to remove the seat to store stuff under the bench. I modified mine where I can just lift the bench out to store stuff under it. I don't have to pull the whole seat assembly out. I know it is not stock but neither is my truck. It is a driver, and I do LOVE to drive it. Besides, at my age I cannot lift the whole seat assembly. lol
