35 Original Running Board Questions

We have a pair of original Ford running boards with rubber in excellent usable condition.

We are looking for recommendations on how to enhance and protect the rubber surface.

In addition, does anyone know how Ford finished the bottom surface of the running boards? Were they painted? If painted was the coating satin or glossy and what color - black?

Perhaps they were bare steel.

Thanks, Mike and Steve

I just worked on an original one family owned 36 ,bottom of running boards were unfinished, does not look like any paint was on the bottom, I used a flat black rustoleum paint on the bottom to stop the rust. on the top we enhanced the original surface by brushing on a bedliner materiel, not the heavy stuff--helped fill in the cracks and looks very good

My experience with NOS boards and cars with their original boards has been that they were painted flat black underneath.

I've had several NOS 35-36 Running boards which were all painted flat black underneath. Also the rubber appeared to be some sort of vulcanized process since the small holes in the boards were used for adhesion of the rubber.
