35 Ford Temp Gauge

I have a 1935 Ford Cabriolet with the original engine, trans, etc.
I have owned the car for about three years.
When I first got the car, the fluid in the temperature gauge was red, easy to see.
Now the fluid has turned clear, I am not sure why. Very hard to see.
What happened? Any way to repair other than replacing?

Sometimes it does that with age. It can be replaced but need to get someone who works on gauges to do it. Walt Faultermeir in SC used to do it.

I had my gauge rebuilt a couple of years ago. Last fall I let my car sit out in the sun with the top down. When I got in to drive home the red fluid changed to clear but it still works. I called the vendor that rebuilt it and left a message but he never replied. I guess the ultra-violet rays from the sun did a number on it. Finding anything as good as Ford made it is difficult.
