`35 Ford P/U Steering

I have a 35 P/U with stock steering. I have rebuilt the box, but it still steers like a 35. Is there any steering box up-grade that will allow me to maintain the original steering wheel (banjo), horn and light mechanism, while getting a better steering feel (NOT power)? I have heard an S10 or Vega is a possibility, but don't know about maintaining the accessories. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The 35-36 boxes still have the fixed sector. The 37-39 box started the uses of a recirculating/rolling sector. This box will enter change with 35-36 box so you can maintain the lighting switch, horn rod, etc. The 40 and later (through 48) boxes will also work but do not have the provision for the lighting switch. The 37-39 box should be a big improvement in steering, reduced steering effort. This is a bolt on exchange with the drilling of a new mounting hole for the top bolt. You also have to relocate the steering lock sleeve.

Vern Tardel's book "Ford Steering, Service, Repair & Modification" goes into some detail on how to install a 37-39 box in a 35.

Hello Everyone,

DuaneF my Dad and switched the '36 box to a '37 and the difference is very noticeable.

I was just really the wrench-man on the job so I don't remember all the details. I do remember we had to find a '37 style bail and bulb for the bottom end of the column, if I recall correctly.

There was a fair bit of beating and grinding to get the old box unmounted from the frame, it's riveted in.

This was a worthwhile change. We got our box from CharlieNY here on the barn. (He also did our rear and transmission, very satisfied!)

JM 35 Sedan also consulted and helped turn wrenches on the job.

I agree with JSeery.

Good luck.
