35 Ford Lighting Switch

I'm interested in finding out what material the lighting switch is made of? Is
it die cast or some of Ford's soybean material? Also is the color an additive
that was part of the original casting? It doesn't seem like it's paint. I ask
because I'm getting it ready to paint it and want to know how to best prep
it for doing so.

The light switch at the bottom of the steering column is stamped steel outer shell It is plated inside and out to deter rust and corrosion as are all of the associated parts such as the bale etc. Inside is an round, black, plastic electrical terminal block which could have been made of soybean plastic. Not painted.

I’m guessing he means top that you turn lights on and off with. I believe there may be two different materials. Not sure what they are exactly. One version appears cast aluminum.

Peter I have a broken 35 and the colour is consistent. I believe KiwinUS is right about 2 different materials, maybe that’s an early and a late thing? Dan

The Horn Button surround, If not obvious aluminum then it probably is a soybean derived plastic that Ford developed. In either case, play it safe, first use primer sealer then paint.

FYI, I asked a friend to resize a 37 Ford horn button to fit into a 39 wheel. He got it done and said it was easier than expected since it was some sort of machinable plastic. The color is not painted on, the material is the color that you see.
