35 Exhaust Manifold - Studs or Bolts?

Hey guys,

My 33 has a 35 flathead in it. When I went to get it from my grandfather's it had bolts attaching the exhaust manifold to the block. I have been perusing the parts sites lately and noticed studs for the exhaust manifold.

What was used in 33 and in 35 to attach the exhaust manifold to the block? Studs or bolts?

Are there pro's or Cons to either method?

This is more of a curiosity for me than anything else. I have always assumed they were bolts, but seeing the studs for sale got me curious.

Thanks!

The studs you see are probably meant for the exhaust manifold-to-exhaust-pipe connection.

I believe that studs used on these year exhaust manifolds would do more to complicate installation and removal. I would suggest staying with original type bolts.

I think I've just worked out why the front exhaust ports have a 7/16 thread and the others a 3/8. It's because the early manifolds had the exhaust system also hanging off those front studs(?). I've only had later motors so I never thought of it before.

Mart.

If you were to use studs, you could not install the left side manifold after the engine was installed because of interference with the steering gear box. Conversely, you could not remove the left side manifold without having to pull the engine at least part way out of the engine compartment to clear the steering gear box.
