Ok. New generator from Macs. Have tried two cutouts, one with diode conversion. I have ground wiresfrom body and moror to frame. Original 6 volt positive ground. The amp gauge shows discharge. My volt meter shows discharge at battery. Original amp gauge must be working as it shows more negative when i hit brake lights. Its so simple, but yet cannot figure it out.

swape the two wires on the geny to cut out ,observe the amps .you could also swap the cut out end for end ,try this and run it just above idol don't prolong this if no result is achieved .Ted

Its got to be something so simple. It charged a couple months ago when i got car running after sitting since 72.

(1)Idol the car and with a wire by pass the cut out ,looped around the terminals. (2) The main wire nearest the fan ground that momentarily you should get a spark and discharge on the Amp meter .Ted

We have bench tested new generator and it charges. When it is in the car it throws the voltage all over the place jumping up and down with stock amp gauge reading constant negative. History, ran all new wires to heqdlights with aftermarket switch and dimmer switch. Also now have signals, via Speedway switch, parking and dual brake lights. All lights work properly. Have not wired in horn or relay. Do have new 6 volt fuel pump. Car starts and runs fine. I leave battery hooked up and never draws it down, but will not charge. Checked wire from cutout to under dash, all good. Thoughts???

If the polarity is off, it will want to send current the wrong way. The field poles should be flashed for proper polarity if that has not been done yet.

Have you tried increasing amp setting?
Moving 3rd brush down increases amperage output...look at the thing and see if it is all the way up or something.

If you turn the Ing or lights on and the Amp gauge goes to pos then the polarity's wrong ,If your battery was flat it could be charged back to front pos becomes neg .Also your wire from the Gen must go all the way to the bat ,cut out then Amp gauge then terminal block then down to the battery or bat cable ,Its possible its not wired through the Amp gauge ,not registering. If i hit the brakes the gauge shows greater neg. I also have a volt meter tester hooked to battery and shows just under 6 volts. Battery was new in January never been flat. Car did charge when I first got it running. According to bench test gen is charging fine, but when wired in car its a negative.

Take a wire from the cut out to a amp meter ( pull the wire out of the dash Amp, and run the new wire through it ).Or just tie the new wire onto the loop on the back of the Amp meter ,the flow of current will give a reading .From the Amp meter down to your starter switch or battery hot side ,this should be as good as a bench test .You should check that the contacts a closing on the cut out .Ted
