'35 cabriolet racing at daytona beach

I enlarged this photo from the Halifax Historical Society collection.
I have been told that the driver is Lloyd Moody, who went on to buy the FORD dealership in Daytona Beach, but unfortunately, he also worked for Bill McCoy, "The Real McCoy", the famous rum-runner. He got caught and went to prison. When he got out, his dealership was gone. This photo is from about 1937.

Cool picture! thanks for posting... I bet those Lyons wheel covers are the ones I found, they're sure dented enough to have been off a racecar! :)

Cool picture! Are you sure that it's racing? There is no car number. Could it be a rolling advertisement at the beach?

That is a good question, but yes, I am sure that it is a racing picture. I am including a few more to show the racing. These photos were enlarged from tiny photographs, so the quality is not top notch. Some of the cars look like they might be Dad's everyday family sedan ! The last photo is of the better sponsered Hofbrau Bar & Grill race team.

Looks like the same car has the number "15" on the deck your last photo set. Ha, it seems like a bar and grill was the place to seek sponsorship.

notice in that last picture... appears like a chrome deluxe 35 grill, but with the bars painted leaving only the surround chrome...
I was wondering if anyone did this back in the day...

wonder why no bumpers on anything?
guess it keeps them from getting hooked together during the race?

That does look cool with the grill bars painted, doesn't it ? That might give some '35 owners an idea.
I am assuming that they removed the bumpers, to save weight, as they did the headlights and spare tire. Back then, you could probably find a new fender for about $1.00.
