35-36 Gas Tanks

Guys,

I just purchased a 36 tank for my 35, going electronic sending unit. Can I use my 35 filler neck? Whats the issue about the vented filler neck on 36's? The gas caps are vented aren't they?

Thanks much,

Peder

The vented hydrostatic sending unit on the 35 vented the tank. The 36 tank had an electric sending unit, thus requiring a vent pipe for the tank. You will need to have a vent for the tank. I think the filler necks are different for the 35 and 36 with the 35 being more vertical and the 36 leaning toward the rear. Ed

That being said, I'm running a 36 tank in my 35, but using the original 35 filler neck, and have no problems. The caps are vented. Brian

if not vented drilla1/8 hole it.

the vent in the neck assists in the filling of the tank, the vent in the cap will allow air in while driving. You will have to use the 35 neck with the 36 tank due to the difference in length between the two. You could solder a piece of 1/4" tubing inside the neck much like the 40 filler neck if you have trouble filling the tank with gas.

The vents sole purpose is to prevent "burping" when you are pumping gas into the tank. The air inside the tank is displaced by the fuel and needs to "escape" somewhere. Without a vent that air wants to go back up the filler neck and will burp the fuel back out the neck. You can try snaking a piece of 1/8 copper tubing down the neck and into the tank and attach that to the tube at the top of the neck with a rubber hose,

There is a Ford Barner known as "Flatheadfan" who I believe has a design for adding a vent tube to the '35 gas filler neck. You could send him a personal message and I'm sure he would send you his information along with pictures. JM

Here's a couple of pics of the '36 vent tube. It's pretty short. Should be easy to convert the 35. Ed
