35-36 Door Window Problem

Guys,

I could use some help. I have a 35 5 window coupe and the door glass doesn't seem to be the right size or fit. The guy who cut my glass has been in business for 40 years and has all of the original old glass patterns. His reference book and patterns match. He cut the door glass 27-1/8 x 13-7/16. The problem is that wilth the regulators all the wa up, the glass barely covers half of the edge felt on the door opening. Looks like the glass could be 1/2" taller no problem. The length of the glass also looks a bit short and just covers the felt on both ends. Unless I keep closing the window, then a gap appears at the back end.
My car originally had a channel insert and bumpers at the door. From my past posts I learned that the felt all the way around was the way to go, so that is what I did. Now I'm also wondering if all the 35 coupe doors were made the same. Is the door with channeled felt over the top, the same as the door that has felt only on the surface of the opening?

Has anyone had this issue and how do I resolve it? Also, if anyone has glass out of thier car and can measure the height and length that would be great.

Thanks much,

Peder

I don't know the answer to your problem but I am interested in this post. Friend of mine has a 36 3 window and is dealing with the same situation,he had glass cut from the poor originals so size should be okay. Full up with regulator and he has about a 1/2 inch gap at the top.

This may not be the solution to your friend's problem but it is worth a check. On the large gear you should find two holes. In the hole goes a brass machine screw with a Fillister head. This screw acts as a stop for the gear's rotational motion. It sounds like the screw is in the wrong hole.

Tom,

On my 35 the screws would limit the window from cranking down too far and prevent the slides from coming out of the window retainer guides. As far as cranking the window up higher, I don't see how that is possible on my car. The lever arms are straight up and the window is still 1/2" short from the top.

Yes, it drifts forward and the roller is in the guide. It is possible that my window channels are not tall enough? Or was the glass held up off the bottom of the window channel with a thicker piece of rubber?

Nobody else has had this problem?

Anyone have a piece of original 35-36 coupe door glass out of the car they can measure?

Thanks much,

Peder

Peder,

I'm currently working on my door windows for my 36 5 window. The glass was new and came with the car when I bought it about 10 years ago, so I don't know where it came from. It measures 27 3/16 x 13 7/16, so I would say your glass is the correct size. At this point my glass does not appear to be too small and I'm not using thicker rubber in the lower channel, just the basic 1/16" thick glass setting tape.

I recently put all new glass in my 35 5 window from montana vintage glass. I had similar problems. I had to set the glass in the channel and shift it back and forth to center itself. The center of the glass does not go center of the bottom channel like you may think. Also there are different channels. it should go back and down. also it may need to shift on the regulator buttons, so they need to be greased, so they are not binding in the channel.

Guys,

Did Ford make any changes in the actual doors between 35 & 36? Or the window regulators?

Thanks,
Peder

Peder-

The simple answer is "yes" and "no." The '35-'36 exterior sheetmetal - no. However, the inside sheetmetal, yes. Early '35s had the door openerer near the front hinge, the window opener was just behind it. Late '35s and all of the '36 model run the door handle was moved to the center of the door. To accommodate the change different opener mechanisms were used. The stamping of the inner door metal prevents any interchangeability of the later door mechanism with early one. I tried and it doesn't work without some surgery.

The window riser was changed during the '36 run. All model 770s (5-window coupe), used 48-702700/1. In '36 the 770's stated with the '35 riser mechanism but sometime during '36 the 770's were changed to a longer 68-702700/1 gear mechanism with a subsequent relocation of the window riser handle.

Basically, if your window riser gear matches the inner door sheetmetal and the factory location holes in the sheetmetal, you have the right one.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Tom

I don't know why I'm having such difficultly with my windows. Seems like I have all the right parts but the windows just don't seal tightly up against the closure channels and appear barely big enough to cover the door opening when up. I'm to the point that I'm just going to make it work, but I doesn't seem right.

Thanks,

Peder

It looks like your glassier has not allowed for the part that hidden by the channel ,I measured mine in the door with sliding a steel ruler in the channel ,It measures 14" high this allows about 1/2 in the U channel lower and 3/8 into the top felt .The length is 27 5/8 long this allows about 7/8 hidden behind the felt, total for both ends .I can double check this tomorrow .If your felt on the opening hangs down this will stop it from rolling completely up .Also there should be a Double U rubber setting tape a bit like a S , that acts as a seal when you wind the glass fully up this seals against the inside upper part of the opening .The glass cut size is critical to get this all to work .Also when cutting glass you need the lower corners rounded of with what we call edge work done on it (smoothed of ) so it doesn't tear up the channel felt when sliding back .Ted .
