34 Windshield Regulator

Hi fellas, my windshield regulator crank has a very steep angle coming out of the dash. It's not hitting the dash on the lower side but close. I'm wondering if things appear correct to those that know?

Just seems to me the crank handle should be more perpendicular to the dash than it is. I just can't figure out what might be different....if anything?

The regulator look right. If the arms clear the dash and the knob shaft fits the hole in the dash it is what it is.

The knob stays in line with the arms thru the motion; so if it is cranked way out, the knob will angle down like it is.

I never found the need to crank the windshield out to it's limit. Maybe that is just me.

One thing I've noticed when looking at other regulators on-line. The base plate (the part that holds the screws to the firewall frame) has the hinge curl of the gears turned upside down. It's possible someone had the base plate off the gear mechanism, and when they put it back together with the riveted hinges, they put it on upside down?

It's hard to see in the third image, but that's what I see as a difference compared to other regulators.....the gears are fitted upside down to what other regulators are put together. Least that's what I've seen from looking at regulators on-line.

My best guess is that someone must have taken the regulator apart and did not re-assemble it correctly. Also, the images of your regulator's extending arms shows that they are upside down but that won't fully account for the angle of the regulator knob shaft in the dash. I've attached an image of my 1935 truck showing how it should look.

You will need to remove the dash rail to properly install the regulator. With the dash rail removed, you can test fit it and hopefully determine what's not correct. The regulator flange with two mounting holes should lay flat on the dash bracket with corresponding holes. There are two bolts that fix the regulator to the dash bracket. The dash rail doesn't support the regulator.

If you can, remove the regulator from your car and post some pictures. I don't see the two bolts, so you should be able to remove the screws in the windshield and the knob and pull it out. Maybe someone can spot the difference between yours and what it should be.

Sounds right; after looking closer; it's clear the inner arms are on "top" of the outer arms on his regulator; while images of other regulators show them on the "bottom". Like said it has been put together wrong.

Thank you all for helping. Yes, from my closer comparison of how mine is put together, the gears and arms are upside down to the bracket that screws to the firewall frame. Someone turned it upside down before re riveting the hinge pins. The only way I see to remove the regulator is to pull back the dash and lift up the arms to get to the slotted roundhead screws under the gears. Those screws are "under" the gear mechanism as the last image shows. I may be able to use my 90 degree angled screwdriver to remove the screws but only after lifting up the arms with the dash pulled back some?

Anyway, thanks for confirming this part is not assembled correctly. I would have only been able to guess what was wrong without your help!
