34 Generator

Barners, anyone know where I can get the "back to back" timken style bearings for my Gen. I pulled a spare gen down and found a single wide ball type bearing installed, is this an after market or original ?.
I thought the use of tapered roller was to combat thrust from the fan load.
Any info would be much appreciated.

Charlie Schwendler sells his version of the front bearing. It is double bearing in one case with two spacers, sealed bearing higher load ratings than the original. I have run it for a couple of years. Originals are two of the 18-10094 each is one tapered roller bearing + one race. Be very careful not to damage the special nut and snap ring under the pulley and carefully inspect the bearing side of the pulley for cracks around the boss for the armature hole.

Kpar,
Get your hands on the JAN/FEB 2004 issue of the V8 Times official publication
of the V8 Club of America. On page 17 is my article including bearing spec and number
and a drawing of the spacers to make it work. You'll be far better off dollars wise to
make it yourself.

Charlie, I knew I read about this front generator bearing modification somewhere but I was thinking it was much earlier than 2004.
We used many of those same size ball bearings in the products manufactured by the company I worked for. The same basic ball bearing works well as an early Ford pilot bearing, so I grabbed a couple hands full before retiring.

John,
The critical thing is get sealed bearings.
Only a couple hands full?

Sealed both sides & filled with high temp grease. Used them in rebuild of several 35 generators and a couple as pilot bearings. Have one in my 35 Fordor for last 30k miles. No squealing yet :). Not sure what I was thinking only grabbing two hands full ;).
Hey, I just might see you and Alice at Canfield. Will be picking up a new 4 post lift in Warren, Oh later this week. Could do a day at Canfield before heading home.

John,
That will be our good fortune...........it would be a fun overload if you and
Redneck show up at the same time !!!!

Mike,
5202 bearing, what I use is a double row, I'm sure yours work just as well.
What surprised me was the load carrying ability of the 5202 far exceeds the Timkens.

Thanks for all your inputs Barners. Only been on the FordBarn a short while but I've yet to see a post (on fords) that couldn't be sorted out.
Lawrie would you have the V8 times mentioned.

Charlie,
I have a couple Generators to restore next week and I'll try the bearing you mentioned. I like the idea of a double row bearing VS the two singles.

The bearings have part numbers on them. Even if they don't have numbers
they can be measured. Go to a bearing supply house or Napa and see it they
can match them. G.M.

I have replaced several Generator bearings with a Nachi 5205-2NS bearing the 5205 is a angular contact bearing and the 2NS is the double seal on each side of the bearing which is important and they have a higher basic load rating than the original Timken bearing.
Spacers have to be made as per drawing.
