34 fuel gauge hydrostatic gauge

hows the correct way to fill /adjust the fuel gauge, do you fill the tank full of fuel then put the red dye in the gauge and wait for it to register on the fuel gauge ,
thanks in advance Phil Australia

You should get a copy of Ford Service
Bulletins for 34, a must. Air line is removed, liquid put in a drop at a time till gauge registers at the E point. Air line must then be pumped with a hand pump to remove condensation, debre or any other impeading matter in the line. Line is then connected and car driven over a rough road sloshing gas in the tank which charges air to push the gauge liquid.

With the air line off you fill the gauge to Zero. First check and make sure the small cooper or brass tube from the bottom of the hex brass on the gauge to the glass tube is open. If this tube is blocked like most if it has been sitting with no fluid for a long time it needs to be cleaned out. Down in the hex is a round piece of brass about 1/8" or 3/32" in diameter and maybe 1-1/4" long. It has a little bend in it to keep it in a certain position. If you need to take this out measure how far down it is from the top and put it back in that position. You need a very SMALL pair of needle nose pliers to get it out. A measured amount of the red fluid was installed then the calibration rod was installed to the depth that the red fliud was at zero. This allowed for tolerances of the hex, tube and glass. The bend is to keep it at that location so don't straighten it, make sure it's snug. After you install the fluid you can pump your finger up and down rapidly on the top where the air hose connects and as you pump air with your finger the fluid will rise in the glass gauge. When you get it up some hold your finger tight for about a minute and the fluid should stay up if there is no air leak. The air line on the gauge and back at the sender must be tight and not leak. The sender is a simple mechanical pumbing device and can easly be repaired by soldering. Blow it out good put a small wire in all the holes but don't make them larger and clean good with carb cleaner and blow out good with air. Any broken or cracked catch cups need to be soldered and it will work. The tappered fittings on the ends of the air line must be soldered they don't work like a ferrule. I found one with loose ends once. I always slip a tight piece of rubber hose over the air line at the tank and with my mouth blow LIGHTLY in the hose while someone watches the gauge and let it go up to about 3/4s, don't blow to hard or the fluid will come out hold your tongue over the end for a minute or so and the fuel should stay at 3/4s if you don't have a leak. As jim said you have to have rough motion to pump air to make it work. A couple of guys lifting up and down on the bumper gets fast results or move the car foward and hit the brakes a few times I sometimes put a paper towel over the filler neck and blow in there with my mouth. No nasty replies please. G.M.

You can have the tank almost MT or full then add liquid till the gauge reads correctly, rock the car sideways to get a reading between fills .You hang the gauge below the dash to do this .sometimes there's a little cap over the glass tube .

There may be a cotton filter on top of the glass to keep dirt out but no cap. The top of the glass tube has to be open or the fluid would stay at one level and not move like liquid in a straw with your finger over the top end. I use a hyperdermic needle to install the fluid. G.M.

As I said a little cap over the glass tube ,this is pushed into the top of the cover over the tube .You will likely only see these on original cars .I use a ball point pen tube to fill with ..wash the ink out in hot water .then suck the liquid up with your mouth then hold your finger over it ,and drop it in .

That should taste good not to mention it's probley bad stuff. I don't think you want any of that in your mouth. G.M.

In laboratory's its known as a pipet ,I have tried eyedroppers etc This is much more controllable as you lift your finger off it will put one drop in at a time ,and you don't need to run all over town looking for one with the tip small enough .
