Chatter in the rear end? 34 Ford stock rear, when I bought this car I thought I had a bad clutch, Now that I have replaced the transmission new clutch and flywheel, bearing etc universal joint I guess the problem is in the rear end. When releasing the clutch the noise is back there and the chattering begins as you drive along its ok and functions quietly?? could this be in the spidyr gears or bearings? I have replaced the bearing in the front driveshaft. Thanks Guys Gordon

remove the rear hub caps now put a chalk mark on the tapered part of the drum to & inculding the axle nut do both sides now take it for a ride check chalk marks to see if they still line up hub to axle nut sometimes a hub or key is bad.

Worn out shackles can promote chattering. Check them out. Also re-tighten the spring U-bolts with a bar.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying about the chattering in the rear end, but chattering when you release the clutch means that the pressure plate arms are not equal when they meet the throw out bearing. Just because it is new does not mean that the arms are correct.

if you don't have the "chatter" rods in place, you are relying on the motor mounts to push the chassis and the rest of the car forward.
