33 gas gauge issues

My gas gauge used to read 3/4 when full, at least I knew I had a 1/4 tank left when showing empty. I had the gauge hanging loose while the dash was out for woodgraining, now when back in it doesn’t work at all. Suggestions to start troubleshooting please?

Change to mid-'30s electric fuel sender and gauge, which I've been considering. I've got a snip of red ribbon in the '33 gauge; appears as the red liquid and very original!

The mid-'30s electric sender screw holes will line up with the threaded tank holes using a conversion 'kit' I believe. Place or position the mid-'30s gauge where you want it.
Replies welcome!

With a restored stock tank unit, good leak free air line and a known good working gauge I have yet to see one that doesn't work well. My 32 5w and 33 phaeton have them. The tank unit captures gas sloshing around in the tank at 3 different levels and adds to the air pressure that raises the liquid in the gauge.
Did your gauge get on its side inadvertently and the red fluid ran out? These are actually pretty simple.

Deuce, it hung upside down for six weeks while the dash was out for woodgraining. I didn’t see any evidence of leakage though. The fluid went somewhere!!
