Hey Ford Friends,
I am replacing all the fluids in a newly purchased 33 Ford project car. What is the best modern day replacement for transmission gear oil?
Thanks much,
Mike

also sae85w90 seems to work well in my car. In the northeast USA

Depends on how viscous you want the fluid to be and what temperatures you are driving in. I would go for a multi-blend one.

I use this in my 33,made the transmission shift as nice as,and is the GL 4

Some of the later gear oils (GL5) have components that are said to be bad for brass or bronze transmission parts, such as synchro and thrust washers. That's why posts recommend "old fashioned" GL4.

This is Fords recommendation.

I use SAE 140 in steering box , ****** . u-joint and rear end .

I am in WI and in cooler weather the ****** is a little stiff to shift but that goes away if you let the car warm up a little .

If you look at the types listed in post 2 you will notice that they are mild EP GL4 rated. You can use a non EP oil like GL1 for light duty OK but the GL4 rated lubes are mild enough that they can be used in overdrive transmissions that require mild EP. As was mentioned, there is a risk using high EP GL5 lubricants in the old transmissions due to the phosphor bronze bushings in the 2ng gear, reverse idler gear, and the thrust bearing on the cluster gear. The higher EP has a more acidic property in it to attach the phosphorus to the gear teeth for extra pressure but it also munches away at the bushings and synchro blocker rings. The viscosity can be multi type with polymers or straight grade as long as it is appropriate for the temperatures where the vehicle is being operated.

I've got a new 5 gallon can of GL-1 that I had bought for my Ford 8N, sold tractor, so I'll save it for the '41 coupe.
