What does the number 40-6049-A2 cast on an Aluminum head mean? Can you tell from this number if the head is for a flat top piston or a dome piston? Thanks
The number is actually 40-6049-A2. The 40 means that the design was introduced in 1933/34 ( used thru 1936) and is for flat head pistons. The 6049 indicates that the head is for the passenger side of the engine with 6050 being for the drivers side. The -A was added to indicate aluminum (-B indicated cast iron). The 2 (in A2) indicates a different design of head with narrow spark plug holes.
