32 rear end made from 32

I have a 34 complete rear end and would like to replicate a LATE 32 one This is the one with the scalloped torque tube. I know that the speedometer location is rotated about 65 degrees different that the 32 but I need to know how much to cut from the front end of the torque tube. someone out there must have done this before. Need the dimension from differential flange to the front edge of the bell. (overall length) I have numerous early 32 rear ends but have been told that they have a different torque tube length than the late ones. I have a machine shop that will do the work but need the correct overall length for tube & driveshaft Thanks Pete

Don't know the exact numbers for you.... but....can't you just measure the early one and compare?...

Go from the axle centerline to the front face of the torque tube... I would think doing your own math would be better then trusting numbers online, just to be safe....

Good luck
Zach

I went thru this, sort of. I'm putting a '48 rear in a '32 and I still have the early '32 rear. I have the exact measurements I used somewhere, but I'd feel more comfortable if you worked it out yourself. What I did was I measured the OD of the flange on both the early and late axle housings. Then, I measured the distance from the OD of the axle housing flanges to the face of the torque tube flange. Half of the axle housing flange OD plus the distance from the flange OD to the torque tube flange face is the distance from the axle centerline to the torque tube flange face. That difference between that number, late and early should be the torque tube length difference.

Question- Are the late '32 and '34 axle housings the same??

32 torque tubes are all the same length, If you measure one of those it will indicate how much to remove from your 34. The difference in torque tube lengths is with 33-34 PU vs passenger car units

I just happen to have my late 32 rear apart. The torque tube is 53 5/16 inches and the drive shaft is 51 5/8 inches.

I'm doing the same thing. My question are the '32 late (scalloped) and the early (round) drive shafts the same? If they are the same then only the torque tube would need to be cut because I have a round tube I could rob the drive shaft from. John

Are the axle housings the same early to late '32? Are there dimensional differences between the '34 and '35 differential castings other than the width?

to answer your question, they are not the same. the early `32 drive shaft is similar to the model A.

the early and late `32 axle housings are the same EXCEPT for the radius rod mounting brackets. the early mounting brackets run parallel to the torque tube and the radius rods are bent adjacent to the mounting brackets. the late mounting brackets are mounted at a angle that intersects the forward mounting point of the radius rods and the late radius rods are straight. at least, that`s the way i see it.

Are you sure? I thought the difference was between using a 4 cyl vs the v-8 installation. The rear trans mount is reversed and that changes the trans position in the frame and its distance from the rear end. 33 and 34 PUs and pass use the same frame, front motor mounts and torque tube lengths in my opinion.

I thought the early 32 bells took the Model A gaskets and the later bells took the bigger gaskets? I sure could be wrong!

Yes, not the same at all.
From memory, which leaks, there may be a tiny difference in torque tube overall length as well...I believe the '28-32, '32-4, and '35-48 banjos all have very slightly different center-to-flange dimensions. Saved those numbers somewhere, can't find... but get a late '32 rear measurement to be absolutely sure.

Dear Barn Junk,

The question is about '32s, not '33-'34s where there is a difference in the length of the torque tube and drive shaft between fours and V-8s. This is no difference between these components in '32s, be they fours or V-8s.

Axle housings: Andy is right. The early 32 and late 32 are different. The bell on the early 32 has same bolt pattern as Model A. The bell on the late 32 housing is exactly the same as 33-34, and has the larger bolt pattern/gasket.

Driveshafts: Early 32 is obviously different than late 32. Early 32 is same tapered drive as Model A. Late 32 is a pinned 10-tooth spline, like 33 - 36. Length of late 32 driveshaft is 51.660"

Torque Tube: The early and late 32 torque tubes are very close the the same length. Late 32 is 53.365" and 33-34 V8 is 61.876".

Above dimensions are from Ford factory drawings.

Thanks for the dimensions I actuall did this before but lost the dimensions. I cut the torque tube 3 inches back of the bell (front) chamfered both edges of cut rotated bell 65 degrees for speedo opening (33-34 is at 12 oclock and 32 is at 4:30 oclock), Welded back together and dressed weld. For the driveshaft I had machine shop cut driveshaft tube and turn the spline shaft to fit perfectly in the ID of tube, then cut tube for correct oveall length slid in spline shaft and welded. A perfect duplicate of the original LATE 32 rear end Thanks Pete

Thanks to John R and True Blue 32 Man. That was exactly the kind of info I was looking for. No sense in tearing the early 32 apart since nothing will work. I will modify my 34 to replicate the late 32. Not worring about the different radius rod mounts at the rear between the two, I will keep the 34's. Very few will notice. John

Dear Dave, We are all hear to learn and I understand about 32s. I feel when what appears to be incorrect information is seen on the Fordbarn like in the previous post, it is important to try to get it clarified so that it doesn't become another of the many myths that seem to get repeated over and over on this forum. That is why I brought it up on this thread even though it doesn't directly affect the 32 rear question. I like to learn new "facts" even though they don't necessarily apply to cars I have.

Yes, Barn junk that refers to the difference in 4 cyl drive lines vs v8 drive lines in 33/34, During typing I must have made a correction erasing and eliminated the 4cyl vs v8 part, my mistake for not proof reading. Pete, Bruce answered your question they are different.
