32 locking spare strap question (oh Dave…)

I have a 1932 locking spare tire strap. I also know two other local people with the same strap. Both of theirs were much wider that mine. I initially assumed their were bent wider to fit the wider repo tires. It was suggested to me that maybe mine got hit making it smaller. What is the original spread?

Re: 32 locking spare strap question (oh Dave…)

I don't think the width is a big issue. The strap is pretty soft so if you have to "widen" it some that is easily done. I suggest you mount it on a tire carrier and then try to lock it. You will probably find it will need some persuasion to get it to lock and un lock. I have had many of these straps over the years both NOS and used. They all were different, nothing a little pullin' & squeezin' wouldn't fix.

Well I'd hate to bend it if it is correct as it i. I know the reproduction firestones I have are wider than what the car originally came with. Mainly curious as to what the correct width is.

Jim,

Please look in your book, page 19-8. That's a NOS strap and you can deduce the width from the other dimensions.

Definitely looks like mine is flattened out some. I'll have to compare it to a friends and re-bend it.

Wow is mine off. The drawing is a tracing of an unused NOS strap. Time to get bending…..

Frankly Jim it looks pretty close as it is. As I suggested previously, trying it on the tire carrier before you bend it may be the wise choice......just sayin'

I already did that, didn't come close to fitting around the tire. I wanted to make sure I had the right places to bend before I just forced it to fit.

Phil,

With respect, it is as Jim as stated, i.e. not close. Please see photo below.
