32 Ford Fan Clearance

Working on a 32 Roadster with a 21 stud engine . It has a later two barrel intake with the mounting stud for the generator . The generator mounted fan only has about 1/4” clearance between the fan and upper radiator hoses and that’s without a belt with the generator adjusted all the way down. The generator mounting stud measures 4” from the stud to the intake gasket surface. I’m thinking I need to change the intake. I have another one that measures 1 1/2” from the stud to the gasket surface so that would lower the generator and fan 2 1/2”. What intake is everyone else using when not using the original 32 intake ?

It sounds like the intake you mentioned has the generator too far up . . . so I believe you're thinking is correct.

When you said "two-barrel intake" - did you mean two carb intake? I can measure a couple intakes and let you know where the stud lies in relation to the intake surface. LMK

It’s a single carb manifold with a Stromberg carburetor.I was looking at a photo of an original 32 intake . I know the generator adjustment is different but does appear that the generator sits much lower than what I currently have on there.

sounds like you need a 37-39 style manifold, it mounts the generator lower than 33-36 styles.

I found it "easier" to use the "original" 32 intake manifold and use the two barrel adapter. I can change it back to the "original DL" set up in 5 minutes. ALSO, I later found that Ford of Canada made one which I "know" am using. As you can see I had to modify the aluminum aftermarket one....I think I have one or two left IF needed. They work great for the ones who want to both retain the "original" look AND can be put back to "concours" correct in 5 minutes time.

When I've seen folks replace their 32 intake, it has usually been a 34 or so intake. I will measure the distance on my 32 Cabriolet - which has the original motor mounts and a later 24 stud engine, but the dimensions should be the same.

Here’s a picture of the intake and generator that’s currently on the engine and the fan clearance. I have this other intake that has the generator mounting stud 2 1/2” lower.

That powermaster is also higher on early engines. I have a 32 manifold and with genny in lowest position. Post mount the armature centerline to deck surface where it bolts on is approximately 5”. Check what yours is Ken
Lookalike a 33-34 intake on now. That lower intake should help you out. So long as it clears dizzy etc.

In looking at your pictures, the manifold that you show that is not on the car looks to be one that should work out. I'd go with it (though I don't know the year).

Your manifold looks good to me. The 32 used a belt length all its own. CW Moss has them. You may not want to run a 32 intake. Only a 32 generator will fit. The gens have no provision for cooling. The end plates have no holes and the generator pulley has no fins.
