32 ford barn

Just wondering what info. I can get on my cabriolet. Looks like the original tag is there only painted over several times. It is 127-4168. It also has on the tag what looks like a VIN number. it is 181233xxx. Did they have the VIN on the tag also? The tag is on the first body cross member as it should be. Any info. would help ? Thanks, Jim

The VIN tag is something added post production as Ford stamped those engine numbers on the transmission bell housing and left side frame rail only. The body number tag is typical as shown in the photo below. The four-digit number on your tag and in the photo are for the 4,168th and 4,528th cabriolet bodies built, respectively. There were 7,847 '32 cabriolets produced world wide, but 750 of those were produced in Canada and their bodies were tagged differently without serialized numbers as they were not manufactured by Briggs, but rather by Motor & Coach Ltd. of Chatham, Ontario.

I will have to take a photo for you because my tag is different or an after market tag. I will get one tomorrow. It is in the right place though. The 18 number is also on the same body tag, strange. Thank you, Jim

David G. is probably the most knowledgeable '32 guy on this site, but I would suggest also buying the 1932 Book offered by the V-8 Club. Very informative. I just read it when I have time and can't believe how much information it contains. The '32 Ford was very complex and had hundreds of changes during its one year run.

Thanks, I have the book. Question for David. Here is a photo to look at. I was confused about the tag. I am pretty sure it is a Briggs tag now. You can see the original black paint. I think someone sometime added a VIN number on the top of the tag. The rivets are different.

I agree. It appears that someone added the engine number obliterating the words "BODY NUMBER" at the top. In each number's case the paint between the letters is gone suggesting it came off when the numbers were stamped.
