I have been trying to clean out a 34 gas gauge of the dried up gauge fluid, with no luck.I have tried carb cleaner, and also acetone, letting the gauge soak for days in a sealed can, someone in the barn must of cleaned a gauge. Please send me the secret recipe. Thanks E.P.W.

I cleaned mine (both sending unit & guage) In my parts cleaning tank that has citrol & water in it. However if you are talking about the glass tube I would try some Dawn dish washing detergent in it & let soak for a while, also dawn makes power clean & it is designed to soak. By the way it took a long long time to clean the sending unit. Hope it works for you.
Gary.

Gary, thanks for your tip,but I am trying to dissolve the old dried up gauge fluid between the bottom of the site glass, and the gauge fluid brass reservoir, which includes the small copper line between them. Thanks again E.P.W.

Just another side note. My 32 with a working gage wound up harder to read after it had been in a while as the Red color faded to almost clear. JM2CW kc

I have cleaned one out with hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid or Spirits of salts).
It was the only thing I could find that cleaned the copper tube out.

If and when you do get it cleaned out, go to the web site of www.classicandexotic.com and buy there fuel gauge red fluid as it works the best. I have tried other's and this is the best. worth the price!

Still looking for idears, for that secret recipe to clear small copper line on hydrostatic fuel gauge. Thanks E.P.W.

You can buy the copper tubing,it may be easier to replace the line than to clean it if it is blocked solid.Phil

Just cleaned one myself yesterday. Used denatured alcohol. But my tube might not have been completely plugged.

Don't know if I would risk messing with the copper tube. And I think it is brass or some other alloy.

I let mine soak in parts cleaner for a few days, then used a combination of high pressure air, pieces of welding wire, and carb cleaner, before finally getting all the tubes clear. I ran the new line to the fuel gauge that came with the Mac's kit, and I also cleaned out the glass tube and the brass hex tube on the gauge, and just a few days ago, filled the new red liquid into the gauge, and it works great. I did solder the flare ends of the copper tubing after putting the nuts on the tubing first. Used some thread sealer, and just like the manual says it would, drove the car around a little bit to allow the air to push up the capillary tubing. The gauge fluid came up just like it was supposed to, and is actually easy to read since it is so vivid and red.
