312 oil pressure problem

I was asked to look at an engine that was just rebuilt, but when they tried to get the oil pressure up they couldn't. When we started to turn the pump manually we could not get any pressure. After checking we are only getting oil to the filter and not after it. we have installed 3 filters but no difference. is it possible the the relief valve is not allowing enough pressure to push the oil through the filter?

I am no expert, but maybe an oil galley plug was not installed or like you say maybe the pump relieve valve stuck in the open position. how much volume / press. at the filter?

Do you know if the camshaft is cross drilled or grooved? If its crossdrilled try spinning the engine ever so slighty and then prime it.
By rotating the cam perhaps you can get the oil holes to line up and allow oil to the topside.

Worst case scenario is possible misalignment of the cam bearings. I hope not.

Pull the rocker shafts off and then prime the pump.If you don't get oil up top its could be the cam bearings installed incorrectly.

Good luck.

You maybe sucking air from the oil pickup tube where it goes into the pump try nipping up the jamb nut a little don't do it tight!.. ??

If you are using a modern spin on oil filter check the adapter for proper installation. Remove all of the old canister mounting adapter parts and install the new adapter.

Another person who asks a question and never answers the questions guys ask to help...
Until we get more info we are just spinning our wheels. The questions asked by Alaska Jim needs to be answered first. "How much volume / press. at the filter?"

If the Oil Pump bypass valve is stuck WOF there will be oil at the filter but no pressure.
