What carb are most running on their 312 Y block?

I have a 56 bird with the original carb, it seems to flood when parked in realy hot weather.

Could be coil i guess but it is flooding a little when extreemly hot under hood, seems better lately since using prem. fuel?

Just wondering if should use different carb and dist. it is all orig. now and kind of hate to change.

thanks, marvin

Go over to the Yblocksforever forum . They can help you out real well with those carbs . It just might need a rebuild .

It it's what you have, those old Holley tophat/teapot carbs were notorius for vapor locking & flooding. They go on the small base, earlier 4bbl intakes - casting # is probably ECZ-A on it?

(NOTE: Not to mean they can't be rebuilt and adjusted to run good. I had one many years ago, it performed very well on a 312)

I got an ECZ-B ('57 & later) 4bbl intake and a Ford 4100 carb off a '63 390/406 on the '55 Mercury 292 that's in my '56 Fairlane.

It's not original to my '56 but it's all Ford and certainly is an improvement over those older carbs. Other combinations are also out there.

The org teapot was bad about leaking at the brass tube that conects the bole to the base. there are two rubber O rings that are on it. They get old and flat. When you replace them put some grease on them before you push the tube in. If rebuilt right it is a very good carb, but not hi performance. Bill

Not sure where the leak is, but seems flooded and failed to start twice last summer [starts fine in cool weather] has not failed to start this summer.

The underhood temp is realy hot, items like the battery or any metal is almost too hot to touch, I guess nothing to do about that, just the tight quarters under there.

Is there a four blade fan available, or fan with clutch that would cool better?

thanks, marvin

Four and 6 blade fans are available. I bought my 4 blade off ebay. I see them quite often, search Y block. The six bladers are available form the Ford od car parts stores.

When buying a used one, make sure that the hole spacing is correct as they are different spacings. Make sure of the overall length too as there are multiple lengths.

If you stay in the Ford brand, nearly all the fans had the same bolt pattern from the mid fifties to when they went to one nut holding them on in the mid 90's. If you can still find one in a "used auto parts yard", a six cylinder Grenada or Maverick with air has the perfect fan for most cars. I think I still have one hanging on the wall.
