31 roadster water pump help

Hi guys , need some strong advise here . how can I stop the water pump from leaking without removing it from the car.?? I see split packing rings for sale but I never installed them. the manual only shows how to rebuild a pump. can I just add the packing ? please advise . thanks THE HOOCH

It isn't a hard job to remove the pump and give it a complete going over, but you can also just unscrew the packing nut, then use a dental pick to remove ALL old packing and install the new split lead packing rings. Use lots of grease on the packing rings and stagger the gaps half way around. You'll need to run and snug the packing nut a couple times during the first hour, but it only needs to be snug, not dead tight.

Add some blue waterproof grease to the rear grease fitting. just a little should do it.

Throw original Ford water pump in the ditch and get a leakless and be done with it..

Old leather bootlace soaked in oil works pretty good for packing.
