31 Roadster side curtains

Recently purchased a 31 Roadster without side curtains. I have been able thru a friend to get samples to have them made. My question is this: how far dose the rod fit it the door and should it lock in place and not rotate. Mine stay about 3/4' above the door when inserted and can be rotated

They should not rotate. The side curtain rod actually sets into the door latch. The rod has a tapered flat sides at the bottom. These index into an slot hole in a bracket on the inside of the latch. Ford used this system starting in 1927, through 1931.
 
That you can get them made is fantastic! I thought of getting them for my roadster, but a Google search shows no one making them. Post a pic when they are done!
 
Thanks for the input! After much trial and error I got them to drop in place, Side note: they are available at Snyders $49.95 pair
 
The rod cannot rotate because the part of the rod that goes into the door is not round, it is flattened. The rod goes into the door about 4 inches and the rod above the door is round.
