'31 Indented Firewall Gas Valve

I always turn the gas valve off on all of my cars. The '31 indented firewall car is a pain. The car has 2 cut off valves under the hood. Every time I park the car the second inline valve leaks a few drops.

If I make sure that the firewall valve is good and test it for no leaks over a period of time, is it normal practice to not turn it OFF every time you leave the car to go in a shop or restaurant? Surely Ford did not intend that the hood be raised every time you stop.

I know that there are electric fuel solenoids available, but I would rather try to keep original.

My carburetor does not leak, so I only turn off the shutoff when the car goes in the garage for the night. I leave the hood up as a reminder.

You know I asked the same question on my late 31 coupe. I have tired every known float valve and they all work to a degree but it only takes a spec to keep them from seating and leaking. I currently use a Viton tipped float valve and it has worked the best of all I have tried. But even it has on occasion gotten something in it and leaked. Like you I wanted to keep things as original as I could but in the end choose safety over originality. I use the electric solenoid.

You don't HAVE to turn it off if nothing leaks. I have forgotten to shut it off for weeks at a time with no problems. I just kick myself when I do do that.

Install an electric shut off if any one is really worried.

1930-31 snyders has an electric shut off wired to the key . used one for yrs , no problem . never open the hood ! ................ steve

I have a late 68C Cabbie with a firewall mounted shut off. It doesn't leak but whenever I leave the car for more then a few minutes I shut off the fuel. Only takes a few seconds to lift the hood. My PU & fordor both turn off under the dash but they're just the opposite of one another in the direction they turn off. My 29 rdstr. has a downdraft with an electric fuel pump, that one is a no brainer.

I turn the valves off when I work on the cars. The valves stay on year round. Habit I got from driving an A as an everyday car many years ago.

Why are there 2 cutoff valves under the hood? Since you want to keep it as original as possible I would just fix or replace the original valve, and eliminate any other valves in the fuel line. Or, are you calling the carb float and needle and seat the second valve?
