31 AA Transmission - Five Speed ??

Hi everyone.

I have another mystery which I hope can be solved by the experts here:

The truck has a 5th forward gear:

1 3 5:confused:

2 4 R

However, '5' seems to be more like 3. I call it 3.5 and I must 'syncro-shift' into it from 4, rather like downshifting.

Also, I do NOT need to pull back the thumb lever to reach reverse. No apparent issues shifting or driving.

Any idea on how this 5th gear was meant to be used or if the thumb level should cause alarm?

I think your shifting lever is worn, and your reverse lockout is worn, and you are getting 3rd gear twice. Ford did not make a 5 speed in 31. Unless you have some aftermarket transmission, I think your transmission tower needs rebuilding.

Thanks guys.

Is this an immediate concern (i.e. keep the tow truck phone number handy) or can I simply ignore '5' and continue driving until I figure out how to do the tower rebuild?

well if youve got that much slop i wouldnt drive it much till you get it fixed, may not be allowing you to fully mesh gears. and with reverse lockout not functioning dont brainfart on what the shift pattern is...

its a somewhat easy fix and easy to take the shift tower off so I'd just do it. remember to throw a towel over the open trans once its removed so stuff doesnt fall in it. best do do if the truck has sat for a day as then the top wont be completely coated in oil...

@Tom: Sure. Is there a shot that is most enlightening? From underneath or thru the floorboard?

@Bob: Thank you so much! Just started reading about the killer spring and how to deal with it safely.

There is no killer spring in the 4-speed.

Hi Tom,

Some photos of the ****** are below.

While messing around with the photos, I noticed something: I DON'T have a 5th gear. The shifter level translates laterally between 1 & 3 just fine. However, past 3 it begins to rotate. Thus, I'm fooled in to believing it moved further to the passenger side. It's still in the 3 slot.

Could this be a result of slot in this set of pins in the last photo?

@Bob: From what manual is that exploded diagram? I was under the impression that the AA was the same as an A except for springs, brakes and bed configurations. Obviously, I'm misinformed.

and frames and axles.

And 4 speed ****** which started late 29 to end. :D

The shifting lever on a 4 speed is located by the pins. The lever is likely worn at the pin location and needs to be welded and re ground to take up the slack. Take the cap off and the lever will withdraw from the tower so you can repair it.
