302 ford water pump help

Ok hear is what I have ....

timing cover .RF E3AE 6056 AB.I think to be 1983 302 full size auto...
The water pump is aftermarket aluminum unit with driver side inlet.it fits 70 to 78 302
its all going on a 1986 302 short block

My question is this
Is the timing cover for reverse flow water pump???
if it is... can I use a non reverse flow water pump on it 70 to 78
when did reverse pumps first come out ??what Year
I NEED EXPERT HELP ....PLEASE...Thanks John

It depends what donor car your 1983 302 came from, the reverse flow started in 1980 but some full size Fords,Mercs And Lincolns remained regular flow until 1985.After 1985 almost all were reverse flow this is the one I am using on my '84 5.0 aka 302: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/pa...kaviZ8ii0v?itemIdentifier=14100_388076_10947_ and it is regular flow.

Reverse flow is identified easily as the pump being driven from the back side of the serpentine drive belt. This was usually the 5.0L HO. The 5.0L STD used the normal rotation (before serpentine).
