30 Coupe radiator

On my 30 Coupe, when I start the engine and let it idle, no issues.

However, when I rev the engine and keep it there especially after its warmed up, it has antifreeze coming out of the overflow.

Note: The car is not being driven just idling and running in the driveway.

I read in the Les Andres book that it needs a baffle and the over flow hose needs to be positioned correctly.

Since I don't know the history of my radiator, I am going to have a radiator shop go through it.

My question is, do I need to tell them to put the baffle in?
I took the cap off, and could not see anything but antifreeze, so I am not sure what I am looking for.

Any advise?

TIA
Clay

Your radiator could be overfilled so that's why you don't see the baffle... Lower the level to check it out then refill so it's at or just below the baffle....if you find that you don't have a baffle after lowering the level then yes it's an issue

Hi Clay,

If you do not do a "Search" for same, please wait and allow our famous Mr. Buster T and his partner, Mr. Bill Williamson to offer their well worth radiator overflow suggestion.

Some times the radiator just has to find its level. On mine it has a level and I just leave it at that. Some times I have to run the front end up on ramps so the radiator inlet is the highest point, then I burb the coolent, in other words you have to get all the air out of the rad.and engine block by letting the car idle with the rad. cap off. h.t.h. The baffle on my 31 looks like the inside of a toilet paper roll. It starts just below top of the radiator and heads down. I didn't even know what a baffle was but noticed a jagged edge just below the top of the radiator and suspected something was missing. I found another radiator with a good baffle and had the radiator shop install it. It may be easier to have them build one.I was having the same problem you do but lost anti freeze after driving .Maybe your baffle is missing.

I have newer radiator in my 30 coupe and initially it had No baffle. I found some pictures, took them to a radiator guy. He removed the top of the radiator and installed a baffle. Now, No problem, The level of the water/antifreeze is about 3/4" above the core.

Mine does not have the baffle. I removed the radiator before I knew anything about Model A's to have a leak repaired and wish I would have had a baffle installed at that time. I didn't know it originally had a baffle at the time. I would definatly have a baffle installed. I had to install a thermostat and extend the overflow tube up to the cap to prevent it from overflowing. You can search and possibly find some pics of baffles on this site. I have seen them before. I will post the link if I can find it.

I just went through this with a new Model A owner in our local club this week. He had filled his radiator to the bottom of the filler neck. It took a lot of discussion for him to get his mind around to just covering the top of the tubes. He called me after he drove home and said that was the trick as no more coolant out the overflow and the cap.
