30 Coupe odors

Hi Guys,

Got my model A on the road for the 1st time. It runs/drives pretty well, I think........

I had the flywheel shaved, new clutch, etc was installed. And have lubricated using the Zerk fitting.

When I drive it, the clutch does not slip at all. When you let it out, all is well.

Also when you drive the car, come to a stop, put the clutch in, its not hard to put into gear. When you accelerate from the stop, off you go, and no slipping. So the clutch is working.

However driving down the road, especially on the pass side, you will get an odor of something hot, like a clutch slipping type smell. I thought it was the brakes getting hot, but I touched the outside of the drums, they were mildly warm, but not hot.

Keep in mind, the clutch/etc, have about 5-10 miles on them. So they are new.

Also, prior to driving the car on the road, I had the car on jack stands and started it up, put it in gear, let the clutch out and watched the wheels. When clutch was let out, the wheels turned, press the clutch in, wheels stop.

Is this scent normal, or is something wrong? Does the clutch have to break in?

TIA

Push the clutch pedal with one or two fingers and see how much freeplay you have.

Do you have new paint on the engine. That will give smells until it's seasoned.

Hi Tom,

I am assuming by freeplay you mean the distance between the very top of where the clutch pedal returns to and where it starts to get resistance for hitting the clutch.

Ok I measured it and its 1" free play.

The engine is painted,

Thank you,
Clay

The clutch should be OK then. The smell of new paint and assembly oil should go away after a few days and miles. I've seen where a new muffler can smoke until about 50 miles are put on it.

Thanks to all that responded.

I replaced my exhaust gasket, found that part of the gasket was destroyed, so I replaced it and wahala no more smells!

Working bugs out one at a time,

TIA
