30 A needs steering box rebuilt

Tx for the suggestion...and yes..have adjusted the worm and it's got allot of movement and is just too much steering wheel movement before something happens..and have got out the ford book to diagnosis..and getting front end shimmy at speeds ..just looking for a rebuilt exchange~ have read the articles on home/machine shop rebuild...so were not going to try at home..
tx for the input

I believe there are four adj and they must be done in sequence, not just the worm. Shimmy could be tires/pressure, worn king pins, worn radius arm ball, loose front brake backing plates, loose pitman arm, loose/worn steering arms and tie rod ends.
Ck the service bulletins for strg box adj procedure or the red book.

Hi bluzrocker
I guess you got 2 probs.
1st is your worn steering
(might be the easy way to do a exchange at the vendors as reomended by the others)
2nd is your shimmy
I doubt this is related to your worn steering.
Check if there is to much play somewhere in you front end....as...
Front wheel bearings! Ball of the pitman arm still round?
Pitmanarm very thight to the steering?
Front wheels got toe in ???
(my car had all of this probs)
If nothing helps your front axle might be worn and a
steering dampfer from the vendors might help to hide this
(Heard good comments about, but have never tried one).
Have fun
Christoph

Edit - seem Paul is wiriting faster...

As said, you probably have 2 separate problems.
Steering box, there are 4 adjustments which have a sequence of adjustment.
Shimmy, can be anything loose from the steering box right thru to the wheel bearings and anything in between.

Tx to all responses..you guys are fast...where can I find the service bulletins regarding the 4 adjustment and the sequence to follow pls?
also appreciate the additional areas to inspect for wear in the multiple areas.

I have new tires on order and will check the wheel brgs and go from ther

A properly restored and/or adjusted original 2-tooth box steers beautifully. No need for an F100.

I'm not aware that the service bulletin pages have made it to the 'net verbatim. But Marco and Bob Carabbio at Marco's A Barnyard site has basically the same information for adjustment PLUS rebuilding instructions using modern needle bearings.

You don't necessarily have to do that though to make it work better.

http://www.abarnyard.com/workshop/steering.htm

The steering box is best adjusted removed from the car. Not a big job but it does require pulling up the floorboards and transferring everything to the workbench. Bob's description includes a FULL rebuild including trimming up the worm where it may be galled - but this may not be necessary either.

Once you see the action of the various adjustments, it's pretty straightforward. Just keep in mind that adjusting the hex adjuster upsets the other slotted pin adjustment - and visa versa. You keep playing one against the other until you get ZERO free play at pitman arm center (or center stop to stop of the wheel) and increasing amounts of free play as you move the pitman to the either ends of travel.

(normally this free play is taken up by the camber/caster of the front end - except you say yours is worn so this is incentive to improve these other areas as well - as you have indicated.)
