If they don't hold tacks dig them out and replace with wood. Take several thin wood slats and stack them up. Shape the stack so it fits in the end opening of the top iron. Soak in hot water or steam and push them in the opening. They will follow around the bend. Worked for me on my '30 Standard Roadster.
