3 on the tree shifting question

Ford six. Three on the tree.

When driving going from first to second. Some times second doesn't engage. If I drop it to neutral and back into second quickly it stick and goes.

Is this linkages adjustment issue or any other thoughts?

I ordered new bushings for the linkage levers.

Clutch engages and disengages as it should.

Once you have installed the new bushings put the shifter in neutral. Then look at the linkage in the engine area to see if the two are even. I not adjust . Also look at the connections at the trans. They can be sloppy.. Make sure the trans is filled to the proper capacity (bottom of the fill hole.)

Thank you. It's a good starting point. Oils is at the fill hole.
Gotta do the bushings and check the alignment. Happy long weekend!

Ford used several transmission types in the 50s so it may be important to know which one. Ford had the H series 226 and then went on to the 215 OHV followed by the 223 & 262 before the Falcons came out in 1960. All of the transmissions were synchronized for 2nd and high gears. Most were 259 series or T86 top loaders for the six cylinder cars. The front lever on the side is for 2nd & high gears and the rear lever is for 1st & reverse. I'd disconnect the linkage and have a partner hold the shift lever while I worked that front lever to check and see how well it fits the linkage in each of the three positions. Get that sorted out and it should work well unless there is a problem internally with the 2nd gear sleeve or the synchonizer assembly. The synchro assembly has parts such as the blocker rings that can wear out and cause problems with shifting. Other problems such as popping out of gear have other causes due to wear on components or possible damaged parts.

New Bushings in the linkage is Key.I went thru this with my column shift 57... Jay From Mass was quick to give me the proper steps...
I see Paul2748 has done that.
good Luck

Up top New bushings, then clean up the adjustment posts threads on the bottom. Set shifting to neutral. Then make sure both arms top and bottom are at center and adjust the bottom adjusters to just smoothly lock in. I lost my hairpin clip and had to use a cotter on meanwhile. But shifts and catches 2nd no problems.

Guess I can drive to work now.
