3.54 Banjo rear end gear?

I've got a late 1932 banjo rear-end with the scalloped torque tube. If the 3.54 ring/pinion gear I'm looking at buying came out of a later model, will I have any problems with it mating to my stock set-up and not require any machine work? The pinion on the one for sale is 6 spline and the flange for the torque tube is 6 bolts. The flange on my stock set-up is also 6 bolts.

Thanks for any advice/help.

There are a lot of differences. The early center sections were narrower so the bells are longer. You should get the axles and bells with the new center section. The center section is also longer so the torque tube will need shortening and also the driveshaft will need to go from 10 spline female to 6 spline female. You can weld on a later coupling. The use of the later bells will make you change the spring mounts also. The later gears can be machined to go in the earlier housings. That might be the easiest.
The old school way was to use a whole 40 rear and spring and shorten the tube and shaft. You have to grind the sides of the spring to get it in the crossmember.

The pinion gear shaft will need to be ground down to the L32-34 diameter, with a slight "step" so that the rearward bearing is a press fit but the forward bearing is a "slight" press fit for preload adjustment capability. The OD of the pinion gear itself will need to be reduced to permit it to pass throught the (smaller than the later) banjo housing hole. ("Already modified" gearsets may be available?)

The backside of the ring gear may need to be relieved at the outer edge so that it will not interfere with the inside of the LH axle housing.

A 1/2" spacer will be needed on the pinion shaft (between the nuts/thrust washer and the forward bearing) because the later shaft is that much longer than the L32-34.

The rear of the driveshaft will need to be changed from 10-spline female to 6-spline female, and at the same time, the driveshaft will need to be shortened 1/2" to compensate for the pinion shaft being that much longer on the later version.

Once the above modifications have been (correctly) made, setup and assembly procedures are the same.

Thanks for the response fellas. Looks like a little more trouble than I had hoped for...
