2x2 intake question

I have a 221 that's been bored to a 258 with a Weber 3/4 cam. Currently I am running a Weiand 2x2 Hi rise manifold with 97's. I was reading the Hot Rod magazine article on intakes and they rate the Edelbrock slingshot very high. Do you think I would notice any performance gains by switching to this intake?

If... I saw the same write up I did not see the comparison to a hi-rise Weiand. My sentiments tell me the advantage of the Sling Shot is the hi-rise feature. hmm. I'm sure their are other opinions, will be interesting to see if someone knows fer shur.

JWL's Book, addresses just this. He dyno'd numerous intakes and carb combinations. Worth the effort to read this, can save you allot of money making a choice??

If I recall, the best commercially available intake JWL found a super-style with adjustable risers within the 2"-4" range. I'm going by memory here, so I could be off.

I think the problem with the Weiand was the runner design and the Slingshot provides a better mix than the older design of the Weiand high rise.

The Weiand does sure look cool though.

I'll tell you in about 1 -2 weeks ; o ) Slingshot going on........ I'll be surprised if I see much difference over a single carb, just had to say Ive done it.

One thing about intake nanifolds, The best ones run great at low speed abd cruise conditions, WOT, is for racing. and that's an Offy hi rise compition dual carb unit made in the 40 and 50's only had one and it went with my Bville engine.

You'll find that the Navarro intakes are really solid performers - due to how Barney laid out the runners (to match how Ford set them up - given the firing order). In all the dyno tests I've seen - Navarro is always up close to the top HP numbers (his 'racing' versions).

On the street, there is probably a bit to be gained by the Slingshot for low to midrange power (probably due to the runner lengths and the small "plenum" where things get mixed).

I'm running a heavily ported Eddie Meyer tall dual intake on my roller-cammed street engine (which is really a full-on race setup). The reason I wanted a high rise was for the long runner length (for velocity at low speed) and so that I could run a front mounted generator and 32 fan setup. Also, like the Edelbrock, the top "riser piece" comes off - so I could get in there with all my porting tools and do "my magic". You can't do this work when the high-rise in one solid casting (early Edelbrock 'Regular', Weiand, Thickstun, etc).

I know this engine would surely like a 3-carb setup - but that kind of screws the whole "look" I was after (early 40's style build). Anyway, the Eddie Meyer manifold runs extremely well on my setup - due to the extreme amount of valve overlap/duration, I believe that port velocity is my friend on the low-end for sure.

Okay - enough babble!

Here are some pictures of the heavily massaged EM manifold . . . quite a few pounds of aluminum on the floor after this exercise!

Another thing about intake manifolds is: the Cam selection. Early in my builds I ran across a problem with a 400jr cam a customer wanted. It ran dual carbs and low speed drivability was poor. This was solved by 2" risers under the carbs. There is a big difference between a street intake and a race one.

ron, was it you who was telling me about the combo that yielded 300f/lbs of torque over a broad range?? I have JWL's book on order after saying I will do so for literally years.

having run one for 25 years and having 4 engines in my garage at the moment I guess I should start doing my homework.

Yes, the engine belongs to Ron Horrell and is in a 35 PU. It has a eaton blower on it (Magnason system), This engine made 300 ft/lbs of torque at 3K and 235 hp at 4500 (Red line) . This was a 294 ci engine L-100 B cam

Nice looking setup . . . if you've never ran a Slingshot, you'll like it! Good luck with your engine.

B&S

B&S the only thing Im a bit disappointed in is that the ports are already oversize on the manifold, and that's going to be an issue I feel in the meantime as its going on the engine Im currently running on daily .. The engine Im building Ive already ported and it still wont match that well... Bugger!

not to hijack the thread but i would love some more info. I'm looking to do a custom eaton 112 setup on a flathead in the future. given that the eatons are narrower than the jimmy's I like how they look on a flathead and I think I found a version that will do what I want on the cheap. 294 is about where I would like to be as well. that's 3 5/16x 4 1/4 right?? big cubes without going crazy on a bore that will end up with thin cylinder walls.

how many PSI? heads/pistons/valves/porting??

Well on the subject of Edelbrock Slingshots - I have an extra original Edelbrock Slingshot intake that I'm considering parting with. It's beauty and unmodified or repaired.
If interested you can private message me.
