292 Thermostat Orientation

Stupid question. I have a 55 T-Bird with the 292 in it. Does the thermostat sit in the manifold or the thermostat housing? I thought it sat in the manifold with the valve pointing toward the radiator but the guy at Napa is telling me it sits in the housing or the water outlet elbow with the valve pointing into the engine.
Most of the drawings I can find look like it is the manifold, where the thermostat valve is pointing toward the radiator. But all the pictures I am seeing are small and hard to tell for sure.

It sets with the large end in the manifold. I doubt it would go on the housing the other way.

The thermostat should sit in the recess in the thermostat housing. The intake flange is flat across the front where the thermostat housing sits. The spring on the thermostat should be facing to the rear or towards the intake manifold.
