29 window crank problem

What is wrong with my window crank,it wont stay down? the spring runs the window back up if i let go of the window crank. there is a lot of grease and oil under the small gear cover and on the big gear...too much and causing not enough hold back?

The window crank pinion should have a spring that expands and causes friction on the cover when the handle is released. Maybe that spring is weak or broken. There is also a large flat spring to counteract the weight of the glass and hopefully it's wound to the right tension and installed in the correct manner.

I was thinking of unwinding the large flat spring one turn and re-attaching it. but you say where the small gear is and crank handle goes in, there is a cover and under that, there is another spring?...that cvr is rivetted on ,i could undo it and look inside...who sells the individual springs?....thanks

as long as you do not have the open gear type that is corrected there is a small spring inside the pinion housing that acts as a brake and the housing has three rivets holding it on, no one makes a good replacement you are better off finding some originals, On most of the Model A regulators that spring is the same. if you can`t find any locally let me know I have some,

thanks for the quick reply...but just now i ground off the rivets pulled the cover. took out the gear, driveing pin/dog, spring etc. I didnt see anything wrong but after a while i reverse engineered it and saw how it works. What I think happened is one end of the internal spring came around the drive dog and was not expanding, just going around. some 6-32 screws and nuts to replace the rivets, got it all back together and it works fine now... one quick question..I have no door windows yet but got new bottom window channels. what holds the new glass in the lower channel ? are they glued in place?
