29 hub caps

Does anyone have a good way to get the 29 hub caps to quit rattling?
I have taken the tire off and tightened up the tabs. They still rattle going slow. I thought about putting a small bead of silicone around them to glue
them in place.

Hi Ken,

It took me awhile, but I got mine to stop rattling. I did use some blue silicone around on each and let it dry (I used a very thin bead which is not noticable when installed. The most important thing I did was the installation. I found I could lay the wheel on the cap, carefully, and if I raised one side of the wheel, it would allow me to further tap the tabs down. I kept doing this until I didn't see any further progress. I used all the tabs. Using this method, with patience, I was able to get each pretty secure....then, the fininshing touch. With the wheels back on the vehicle, I turned the caps that needed a little tightening. On mine, a little twist made them really snug. No rattles yet.....we'll see.

I use about 3 or 4 small dabs of black silicone on the cap before installing. After bending 3 or 4 tabs, I wipe off any excess silicone, and let dry. No rattles.

One thing we did on my dad's '28 was to twist about every 5th tab with a blunt-nose pair of pliers rather than bending them over the back of the wheel.

His caps were smaller in diameter than the hole in the wheel, so bending the tabs over the back of the wheel only held them in the hole - it did not center them or keep them tight. Twisting several of the tabs around the perimeter of the hubcap effectively increased the diameter of the cap and tightened it up in the hole. We bent the remaining tabs over the back of the wheel hub.
