29-30 stearing transition

I am building an early 29 cabriolet and am deciding whether to put in a 7 tooth or 2 tooth stearing gear. My question involves the upper quadrant for the throttle and spark rods. If I decide to use a 2 tooth do I need to find one with a quadrant that will work with a 29 sterring wheel? Do I need to remove my 30 style closed quadrant and add a 29 open style quadrant? I have been able to remove the 29 open quadrant but have not been able to get the 30 off. Do I need to cut the column in half and weld the 29 top to a 30 bottom? What have others done? I have not yet gotten a steering wheel splined or keyed.

The early 2 tooth boxes were made with the open quadrant.I've had a couple,I put a 2 tooth in my 28 and just looked around for an early column.Or,you can cut and adapt if you like, but they are out there.I looked around, bought two in a week or so,then discovered I had a couple in the parts pile. They have all gone to people doing the same thing you want to do.You can also buy the early type steering wheel keyed to fit the later steering shaft. You don't have to modify anything.

I converted a 30 two tooth over for my 29. I bought the upper quandrant from Berts in Denver along with the 1" shorter keyed steering shaft and worm. You can reuse the 30 column by cutting 1" off the top and fitting the 29 quandrant you get from whomever and re drill it for the 2 screws that attach it and thread into the upper steering bushing.

I had a 29 cabby with the 2-tooth column & early wheel etc.In the US the 2 tooth column 1st came out in feb 29,while in Canada the very early 30s were still useing the 7-tooth column. The 2-tooth column is the only way to go if you realy want to use the car.

Hey George, could you please post a picture of your finished column? I am about to take apart my 30 column and install an open quadrant I got from Bert's. Did you cut the one inch off because the steering shaft was shorter, or to make the quadrant fit better?
