28 vs 29 tail light

When was the early 28 drum type tail light on stalk from lower tub changed to the rounded body type tail light on a fender bracket?

Month/year if possible.

And does anyone make an early repo "other side" to license plate with no clear panel under, or do I have to chase up an original and block off clear part for a second tail light ?

Finally, is the lens and cutouts for lens and diameter the same , could a stainless drum be made and the lens rim screwed on to imitate an early light for the time being?

The drum style was discontinued in early 29, probably March or April. Bratton's stocks a drum style shell without a license plate light hole for the right side.

The 28 tuna can tail light and 28 headlights were used through February 1929 here in the states. My Feb. 29 Roadster is so equipted.

Some years ago Al Lepore made new brass, nickle plated, tuna can tail lights; he repoduced both the license plate side and the plain bottom side. Last year when I checked with Al, he advised he didn't have any more and was not going to reproduce any more due to the high cost to produce.

The lens for both commercial and passenger car are the same diameter and the lens are all Red in color.

You might try putting a "Wanted Add" in the Swap Meet on this web site. Never know ?????

Ok , thanks for info, It may give me a reason to get out of an ebay buy-it-now I did last night.

I clicked on a 28-31 tail light and did not realise it did not match ny tuna can.

Wrong description if the new style was not until feb 29.

I cancelled the buy-it-now.

Funny thing tho, as I bought it, at $28.95 US... ebay threw up similar items, and exact SAME light was $20 US from same guy.

I had already emailed beforehand for an international OZ shipping price and that was quoted.

I emailed him saying how come the difference in purchase price?

He said, "that is a US ebay price only".

We here in OZ get ripped off somethin' terrible in everything.

I find it disappointing that ebay vendors know this and rip us off.

Stuff like a 28 radiator shell I have seen $89 US , here they are $239 AUD.

A local vendor sells repo motometers for $125 AUD.

I bought a motormeter AND wings AND shipping for $78 US.

Have not these guys heard of "free trade" yet.
