A friend of mine told me today he is going to sell his 1928 Phaeton. The car is probably a 7 out of 10 as far as appearance and mechanically. What is the price range for a car like this?

Lots of different things to consider on it.. Month made, original items still in place, condition etc- etc .... PICTURES A BIG HELP !!

Over the years I have looked at a lot of middle of the road cars.

They are priced maybe on the low end of a driver, but they can't really be driven as is, they need to be restored again and the owner thinks they are almost worth what a good restored one is..

So they are a hard sell, it is far too expensive to re-restore an older restoration when you have a lot of money in it to start with.

No problem if it is original and you are not going to restore and live with the patina.

But when you have cracked paint, chrome going rusty, a few mice chews in the trim and water stains all thru the roof lining, and a few mechanical glitches , then it is a drama .

What do you want to do with it?

Lets say he want's 20,000 for it. 20K is much higher than the quote given here.

If you kept it 15 years would 20k have been too much to pay today?

You want to buy it restore it and flip it, you can't but it cheap enough.

You'd really have to post some detailed pictures to get any kind of real answer.

For an estimate only. I have a Sept 28 Phaeton that received its AACA Sr. in 1990. Has been driven to Hershey most every year since and has received 12 preservation awards at Hershey. I quit showing it at Hershey 2 years after they moved the show field from around the old stadium but has been by my swap meet space most every year since. It is showing some wear, but is still presentable, runs and drives well and have put over 15, 000 miles on it. The only thing I changed was it now has a Brumfield 5.9 head. About 5 years ago I was offered $32K at Hershey for it - was not for sale. Realistically, it is probably worth around $30K but would not sell it for that.

NOTE: For the most part the Phaetons are rare and desirable as compared to the other body styles. Depending on your location, with a Phaeton it is not so much the price but more if you can find one.

Hope this helps,

Frank

Our phaetons over here are like your tudors over there.

As common as a***holes.

We would swap a 29 coupe for a 29 phaeton any day of the week.

There are probably no better "summer cars" than pahetons. They are much easier to get in and out of for extra passengers than roadsters, yet they still have essentially all of the same features / drawbacks that roadsters do. We have both. I tend to agree with Frank - even a solid restorable 28 - '29 phaeton will run at least $10 - $12k these days. We have ours insured for $35,000, but it would probably sell for closer to $30k these days. It is a six wheel touring car with a trunk and rear bumper extension, but I'm not certain that the dual spares will add that much to the overall price, it seems that this is more of a matter of personal preference. For a good running, respectable car that could be driven "as is" without embarrassment, I would think that you would be "safe" in the ball park of $18 to $22k, but again, just my opinion. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

A quick perusal of all the various Model A 'Classifieds" finds quite a few '28-'29 Phaetons in the $18,000 to $23,000 range. All are restored and in good working order.
