'28 Model A PU - Wood Back?

I just looked at a '28 Model A PU, and the cab has a wood back. I thought the back of the cab on early Model A pickups was steel.

Were the backs of early cabs made of wood? Are there any Model A Historians out there who can answer this question?

Thanks, Festus

Do you mean the center section of the cab? Did they cut the wood out for the rear window? I have never heard of this. Can you post a picture? I do kind of remember someone had made a pickup entirely of wood, it was at the MARC tour in Virgina a few years back.

could be a home made hash job or it might be an indy body. If it were an indy body, like a York Hoover, that would probably be a plus assuming the wood is not rotten. If its rotten, you're looking at a lot of work unless you're a cabinet maker. A photo would help us tell you more.

It might be a converted panel or delivery. See the attached story of a dealership ( Chevy of course) that converted a fleet of Deluxe Deliveries into pickups because they were more saleable !

I've seen an early AA like that - the entire back was wooden, and very carefully made.

I wonder if the truck was purchased as a chassis with front sheet metal and cowl and the rest of the cab was then made by a custom shop.

It certainly had better rear-window visibility than the sheet-metal cab.

If I still have the photos I'll post a link to them here.
