ive been polishing my rad shell today and it reminded me to put it on here as im interested to find out about it as ive never seen a copper shell before.

i only found out it was copper when it fell onto the garage floor and the paint that was on chipped off and found the copper underneath so i thought it would be neat looking on the front of my roadster.

My bet would be that it is the substrate that was under the Nickle that was on your shell when it was first installed on the car.

Hey Merkin, you said that paint chipped off, did you mean chrome or nickel? Or is this a black commercial shell?

it was painted, but now you mention it, i seem to remember being told by the guy i got it from that it came off his 28 panel van, so it must be a commercial shell

Stick a magnet on it.I think you will find it is as Brent says, the copper base for the nickel to adhere to.A real copper shell would be quite a novelty.

I have a 1930 AA Stake Body and it is copper as well. I have a theory that Ford just did not plate them with nickle knowing that he was going to paint them black.
