28 29 Roadster

I looked at a roadster that has all 1929 features (engine number, teacup taillight, radiator shell, etc.) and is titled as a 1929, EXCEPT the only thing I can see that is not 1929 is that it has no outside door handles.

Did any early 1929 roadsters come without outside door handles, and when did the introduction of them occur?

Thanks

Teacup taillight came about March 1929, which was well after the outside door handles started. As I recall the Service Bulletins mention the door handles in November 1928. Your doors might have been switched.

My '28 roadster has an engine number starting with 168 which indicates a June date, but has the date 12-28-28 stamped on the gas tank. It has the tuna can tail light on the left side only, and no door handles. The louvers in the hood are not parallel with the hinge line. It had a red steering wheel, but that was donated to an Town Car restoration.

Anyway, The Ford Model A, As Henry Built It indicates that outside door handles were used with the introduction of the 1929 models in November of 1928, and supplied to dealers for replacements on older models.

Has anyone successfully converted 28 doors to 29?

Neither of my doors nor the latches have provision for outside handles. My wife insists on outside handles as she hates fumbling around trying to get her door open, so I'm thinking I have to convert my in-process roadster. It's really a hybrid of 28-29 sheetmetal parts anyway.

The answer to your questions is on page 302 of the December 1928 Ford Service Bulletin.

Follow these directions and you will have your outside door handles and will make your wife happy.

Is this available somewhere as a stand-alone or must I purchase the entire book to get a look at it?
