28-29 Closed Cab pick-up

Wow thanks for posting Brent, this must mean th hobby is strong and growing!!
Let's all look at the positive side of this. More rods might be built with these bodies insted of original tin,
LOL,
Ken

I understand what the proponents are saying, I just can't see it myself. I mean, are you guys really putting $8500 paint jobs on your A's??? Seems high for an entire body restore and paint (of the body only), much less just the cab and 8500 doesn't buy you paint in this case. This would...maybe make sense for the fine point judging cars and trucks, but then again, it is a RP, so it wouldn't fly right? The guy who had 10k in it wasn't just for the cab.

I just believe that one can buy a decent cab, have it professionally restored, the right way and have original Henry steel for way less than $8500, but I won't say I know everything. If you can't obtain a very nicely restoryed cab for less, then body and paint work has gone WAY up since I worked in the bodyshop.

I also believe that the '150' hours (mentioned above) to restore isn't a liability, but rather, part of the joy and satisfaction one gets by doing their own work, no matter how long the learning curve is or, the number of times it takes to be right, but.... I KNOW that is a whole 'nuther' can of worms.

I can read attitude into my own post, and believe me there isn't any. It just seems like a LOT of money to me that could be used elsewhere...thats all i'm thinking.

This could be discussed until the end of time but yes, quality metalwork along with nice bodywork & paint can easily cost $8,500.00+. I don't believe you are having any attitude in any of this but it does appear you may be a little nieve on the costs of things and what people are willing to spend.

Your comment about buying a decent pick-up cab creates the next question in that just "where" do you find a decent cab, --and at what cost? I don't really know what your definition of 'professional' is, but I would challenge you to show us a picture of a decent cab that can be purchased, and then post an estimate on what you feel it would cost to do a 'pro' paint job, ~HOWEVER your estimate needs to be broken down panel by panel, what you did to each panel (i.e.: de-rust, straighten, patch, bodywork, blocksand with XXX grit, prime, sand, paint, colorsand, buff, etc.) and how much time & materials it took.

The one thing that I can totally agree with you on is if you feel $8,500 is a lot of money, then it probably is a lot of money to you. To many others, they don't feel $8,500 is a huge some of money. For example, have you ever wondered why in the age of $3.00 a gallon diesel you see the roads filled with motorhomes that cost more than what some people's houses do? Why do you think these people choose to spend $300k+ for a motorhome to travel & sleep in when a simple motorhome that has a bathroom, a bed, and a TV can be purchased for $50k? Matter of fact, why do they even buy a motorhome when a hotel room can be rented at Holiday Inn for $89 a nite? Seems like a huge waste of money doesn't it? Or why do people buy new Cadillacs, Lincolns, or Benzs when a Cavalier, a Taurus, or VW Jetta will provide the same transportation for ¼ the price? It seems like a total waste of hard-earned money doesn't it??

Brent, The re-pop gas tank, is that a trueism? Monte

I dunno, but like Will said, it does say that in the latest Street Rodder magazine. Something to the effect that a new stock location gas tank is being offered however with a government mandated roll-over valve in the fuel inlet.

Ken, I don't know if your comment was directed to the street rod side, --or whether it is the restorer side is strong & growing, but my observations is that both sides are strong & growing. Blake registered his banger-powered speedster on Friday morning at the Nationals and was number 9516. Rumors said by Saturday, the registered car count was nearly 11,000 cars!! Pretty strong in my opinion!! Look at how many attended French Lick this year. Again, a pretty strong showing. As I continue to watch good Model A parts sell on eBay, it doesn't appear their prices have fallen much either. I personally am very optimistic about the future of the hobby.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I spoke to someone at length about the possibility of another manufacturer of 30-31 front fenders in the future. They likely won't be cheap (maybe nearly twice as much??) but he assured me they would fit nearly as well as a NOS would. Again, these fenders would possibly be too expensive for some people but a huge value to others.

I know people will buy them, all I said is 'who pays 8500 for a body' and it was just an off the cuff, caddy statement, not really meant to be confrontational.

I'll summarize my opinion this way: In the last 6 months, I have purchased a freshly restored 29 RPU for $7200 and a 29 Phaeton older resto for $12000.

The pickup now has 85 miles on it and is done top to bottom very well, drives like a new A. The paint job did have it's share of flaws and the PO sanded most of it back down for a repaint. The bed needs the most work, having 50+ dings from 80 years of use. The cab is near perfect, truely, and the wood is new. As a matter of fact, this cab could be used as an example. I don't know how many hours I'll have sanding and repainting, and I don't know what grit sand paper I'm going to use, but the metal looks like new, nice edges, new bolts and hardware. True, I won't know whats under the paint until I sand it down, but when you've done enough panels, you can almost see thru the paint and I'd bargain this metal is close to flawless.

The Phaetons body isn't as nice as the truck, but it will need only minor body work, a couple of small patches. It is a great 20 footer, runs and drives nice.

It just strikes me as funny when I think I could put my RPU up for sale and about break even buying a newly produced body to stick in my shop. That was all I had on my mind when I posted my opinion. I may be the only one who thinks they are over priced, and if so, I'm happy being wrong about it.

It's really cool that new tanks and doors will become available.

Rustyrim, living in CA is beneficial but I just watch craigslist and other avenues country wide, daily for fun, and I'm in no hurry to buy. That is the only advice I can give.

I can see these cabs taking off now that Brent mentioned Brookville is involved. There may be a market out there for shops and trucking companies having a 28-29 Pickup built to advertize their business.

someone has been making 50 chevy cabs for a while, and they cost more than that, and they are selling. I know how many hours I have in the one I am restoring, doing cab corners, floors, cab mounts, doors, etc. It makes the new ones worth considering. Barry bought a new 30 roadster body to make his car, and he thought it was worth the money.

I bought two 29 Brookville Roadster bodys. One was shipped to the Virgin Islands (not cheep) BUT sand it, and paint it, drive it. A lot of you folks spend several yrs preping a body. I'm to old the spend that time, and not enjoy the drive. Iceman

I would have paid $8500 in a heart beat! The labor and materials cost a lot more than that to create this truck cab a couple of years ago.
