In your experiences, how fuel efficient was the 272?

When my 55 sedan was stock, it had a 272 two barrel three speed overdrive. When driven with a light foot, on two lane highways, it delivered just over 21 MPG. Switch to the Interstate and keeping up with traffic it dropped to upper 18 or lower 19.
Now with a hopped up 312 and a five speed, it delivers 15, with a high of 19.
